Ramen by the numbers

We read 22,938 Google reviews of 233 ramen houses in 17 cities. What a night of ramen costs, in dollars and in hours of work, how long people queue, what's in the bowl and what goes wrong.

Each circle is a city, and its area follows the number. Switch layers to compare what a night of ramen costs in dollars, how many hours of minimum-wage work it takes, and how often people queue.

Public Google Maps reviews of the ramen houses we analyzed while building our selection, in 17 cities. No new collection, no contact with restaurants. Only houses whose ramen specialty we could identify are counted.

  • Prices are ranges. Google stores spend as bands like €10–20. We use each band's midpoint and the median per city: approximate by design.
  • One exchange rate. All conversions use European Central Bank rates of October 9, 2026, even for reviews from earlier years.
  • Hours of work are illustrative. Price ÷ gross statutory hourly minimum wage in force in October 2026: city level in Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco, province level in Canada, national elsewhere. Singapore has no national minimum wage. Sources in the table on the price page.
  • Mixed years. Reviews run from Feb 2019 to Sep 2026, weighted toward recent ones.
  • Small samples. Belo Horizonte and Mexico City have fewer than 100 wait reports and fewer than 5 ramen houses analyzed. We flag them on every chart.
  • AI-assisted reading. Specialties, vegetarian options, complaints and topics come from our reading of reviews with the help of AI. Complaint categories are our own grouping.
